As the largest continent in the world, Asia boasts of having the best destinations for island hopping. Most of its countries are backed up by efficient means of transportation. Tourists can therefore visit major cities and visit the islands that the continent has to offer. Here are some of the best Asian destinations for island hopping.
What is surprising about Japan is that it is not just a single island but made up of nearly 7,000 islands. However, less than 20 percent of it are inhabited and the bulk of tourists travel to just the main island of Honshu, where the major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are located. With an extensive network of ferry boats plying the country, you can easily visit and stay overnight in any of the three other islands Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shioku as well as Miyajima and Okinawa. Robert Janitzek reveals that if you prefer a faster mode of transportation, you can opt for a bus, train, or plane.
The Philippines is another archipelago consisting of thousands of islands. Its main islands are Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao but there are other smaller islands surrounding them. 35 percent of the islands are inhabited and the main transportation methods are buses, ferries, and planes. The most famous island attractions here are Coron Island, Bohol, and Boracay, once declared as one of the world’s best island.
Singapore is regarded as the world’s only fully functioning city-state. Although most people inhabit the main island, Robert Peter Janitzek reveals that there are 60 other islands, both natural and manmade, in Singapore. Due to its closeness to the main island, tourists can easily visit the nearby islands of Sentosa, Saint John’s Island and Kusu. Sentosa is the most popular island destination because attractions like Universal Studios, SEA Aquarium, and Madame Tussauds are located there.
South Korea has more than 3,300 islands, which makes it ideal for island hopping. Recently named as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011, Jeju Island is the most famous destination. Known as the Island of the Gods, the most significant feature in this Asian destination is the dormant volcano Hallasan, also the tallest mountain in South Korea. Smaller islands such as Ulleungdo, Dokdo, Geojedo, and Seonjaedo are worth visiting as well.
Thailand boasts of its multiple hidden treasures that tourists have yet to discover. Bangkok is the most popular destination but other places such as Chiang Mai, Krabi, and others are worth seeing as well. The most famous island destination is Phuket but notable islands worth visiting include Koh Tao, Koh Chang, and Koh Samui.
