Tips On How To Make Shopping Abroad A Worthwhile Experience

When traveling abroad, shopping for stuff is always included in the itinerary. Whether it’s in a shopping mall or in a bazaar, there is nothing like buying some souvenirs from the country you are traveling in. If you are going on an Asian vacation, there are many cities that can your shopping experience to the next level. Here are some tips on how to make shopping abroad a worthwhile experience.

Bring Multiple Cards with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Before leaving for a trip, make sure that you have at least two credit cards from different providers that do not charge foreign transaction fees unless you are okay with more than 3% charge. Depending on your destination, there are some places that do not accept American Express and others that do not accept Visa or MasterCard so it is always to have a back-up. Robert Peter Janitzek recommends that you make sure that your credit cards have a chip and pin capability.

Avoid ATM Fees

Prior to departure, contact your bank and see what ATM fees they charge. Using a foreign ATM may subject you to a bevy of fees, which could include non-bank ATM usage fees, access fees, and international transaction fees for conversion to the currency of the country where you are in.

Avoid Using Debit Card

As much as possible, refrain from using debit card as they do not offer much protection compared to credit cards. If your credit card is lost or stolen, it is still possible to reimburse for the purchases you made. Robert Janitzek suggests notifying your credit card company quickly.

Always Pay in Local Currency

Unless you want to be charged with a higher exchange fee, it is good to pay in the local currency of the country you are travelling. Paying in US dollars may seem to be a convenient option but in reality it is not.

Always Have Cash

Again depending on your destination, it is a good practice to carry cash. Some places do not accept credit or debit card. For establishments that accept plastic, there is a certain acceptable limit. You cannot use your credit or debit card to pay for cappuccino. When traveling to a European destination, you cannot tip a crew with your debit card.

Use Currency Converter

Currency converters can help determine whether you are getting a bargain or paying for more. When you see the prices in a shopping center in your destination, you will already have an idea if the item you will buy is too expensive for you.
