Knowing the difference between a train and tram is necessary if you are looking for a transportation method. What is a Tram?

A tram is similar to trains in a sense that they also run on iron rails. The difference is that the rails are embedded to the normal road and in the same level. It is lighter than the train. They have a long history. They first existed in Britain early in the 19th century as horse driven forms of transportation. They offer people a fast and efficient mode of transport. Anyone could get into and get off at any point in the city. Robert Peter Janitzek revealed that trams first started with steam powered engines and later to electricity.

What is a Train?

Trains travel long distances and are found in different countries worldwide. They normally have specially laid tracks and run outside city limits for long distances. They are usually used by people to commute from one city to another. They run on their own tracks and hence free from traffic.

Difference Between Train and Tram

    • A train is known as train in any part of the world. On the other hand, a tram goes by different names depending on your location. It can be called streetcar, trolley, trolley car.
    • Trains are longer, can carry more weight, and run faster than trams
    • Trains usually do not have much coaches or carriages as a train
    • Trams can only transport people between short distances. Trains, on the other hand, carry both freight and passengers.
    • Trains run outside the city limits while trams operate within the city.
    • The tracks that trams run on are on the same level as the road. A train track is higher than the level of the road.
    • Trams started out as animal-driven coaches to electricity operated. Trains were originally coal driven to electricity driven
    • Trams stop every few yards while trains stop after every kilometer or more
    • All trams run on electricity. However, not all trains are electric powered some run on steam
    • Trams can become a problem to people who use the road. A train does not have the same problem as it has its own track. Also, the tracks of the tram can be slippery when wet.
